“Oman gave us one of our very best holidays”

Our 17 days in Oman were so memorable in many different ways that I can’t really list them.  As you may recall , we are a well-travelled couple having lived and worked in several countries and travelled in all continents (except Antarctica!!) so I’m pleased to say Oman gave us one of our very best holidays.

The photo above sums it up.  This was our second day and here we are with Pippa’s UK family on a dhow to ourselves actually on Christmas Day navigating the fiords near Khasab, Musandam.  Sublime.

Our 6 days with Experienceit were excellent. We’re not given to superlatives but one is due here.  We cannot fault the itinerary, our guide or the hotel accommodation apart from the Holiday Inn where unfortunately the pool was closed for maintenance which meant the snack/refreshment area around it was also closed.  This was a very minor hiccup which could not have been foreseen.

Said was outstanding.  A source of much knowledge and an excellent driver.  Fluent English.  We also learnt much about Islam and Ibadism covering subjects such as a Muslim’s daily prayer obligations and arranged marriages in much detail.   He was very patient.  I would not have completed the Wadi Shab hike without my stick and his steadying hand.

Friday morning at the animal souk in Nizwa was the highlight of our trip if I have to choose one.  The topography from Musandam to Salalah is so varied and stunning that it’s difficult to single out highlights.  But the honey and goat auctions are unique.

Other highlights – the ravines on the way to the mountain village, the fiords in Musandam and the coastal route from Salalah.   And the Omanis are so welcoming and gracious – nothing seems to be much trouble.

Our 5 days in Mutrah/Muscat were excellent as were our three in Salalah.  We did a deal with a taxi driver in Salalah for day one, then renewed it for day 2 and then again for day 3.  He took us where we wanted and added some ideas of his own.  Our last day was along the coastal road towards Yemen and we arrived at the beach where there is a steep, winding  5km track down off the mountains and escarpment to the camels and a few fishing boats.  Nobody around.  Civilisation seemed thousands of miles away.

We continue to sing Oman’s praises and it will live in our memories.  Thanks Douglas for your company’s contribution to a great holiday  – we will certainly recommend you and please thank Said for his efforts too.
