Day 1 Arrival / Muscat
Upon arrival into Muscat, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Depending on the time of your arrival you may begin your tour of Muscat City. Dinner will be served in the hotel.
Day 2 Muscat City
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be able to explore the beauty of a modern Oman that still honors traditional culture. The day will start with a tour of the Grand Mosque, followed by a visit to the Bait Al Zubair museum, which gives a fascinating introduction to Oman’s rich heritage. Next you’ll drive along the breathtaking waterfront Corniche, visiting the Fish Market and the charming Mutrah Souq. Along the way, you can stop for photos at Al Alam Palace, the official palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. Afterward, you will return to your hotel for the night.
Day 3 Fanja / Birkat Al Mouz / Nizwa
Depart shortly after breakfast by the mountain road to Nizwa. Enjoy a photo stop in beautiful Fanja, known as the “Gateway to Oman’s Interior.” Continue on to Birkat Al Mouz, a village nestled against side of a mountain, and home to oases and plantations. There you can see definitive examples of Oman’s ancient and unique Falaj irrigation system. We move from there to Nizwa, the original capital of Oman, and home to famous souk markets. Take a break to browse, or purchase some of Nizwa’s famed Omani silver crafts and other handmade items. Nearby, we will pay a visit to the Nizwa fort, a masterpiece of defense architecture. Dinner will be served at your hotel.
Day 4 Wadi Bani Kahalid / Wahiba Sands
Today you will set out into the vast Wahiba Sands desert. Wahiba Sands, named after the Bani Wahiba tribe, provides ample opportunity to enjoy Oman in her purest form. Along the way you’ll have the chance to visit Wadi Bani Khalid, distinctive in the beauty of it’s year-round flow of water, and definitive of the myriads of ancient riverbeds lacing Oman’s landcape. After resting a short while in the wadi, you’ll carry on to Wahiba sands, where you’ll unwind in the quiet of the dunes, experience sunset in the desert, and enjoy a traditional bedouin meal at your desert accommodations.
Day 5 Sur / Ras Al Jinz
After a traditional bedouin breakfast at camp, you’ll be spirited off to the beautiful coastal city of Sur. After settling into the hotel and having some time to be refreshed, you’ll be taken to the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, the only place in the world where the public can witness the nesting process of the majestic Green Turtle. This once-in-a-lifetime experience can include the possibility of watching firsthand as baby green turtles emerge and make their first journey toward the sea.
Day 6 Dibab / Wadi Al-Shab / Muscat
After breakfast you will embark on a day of swimming adventures. First you’ll experience one of Muscat’s hidden gems – the deep blues and aquas of the Bimmah Sinkhole near the town of Dibab, then a short hike into Wadi Al-Shab where you’ll discover a waterfall hidden behind a keyhole entry. Picnic lunch will be provided. After thoroughly enjoying these aquatic treasures, you will return to Muscat for the evening. Dinner will be served in the hotel.
Day 7 Salalah City
After breakfast, you’ll be transported to the airport for your transfer to Salalah. Upon arrival in Salalah, you will begin your tour of the city with a visit to Al Baleed Archaeological park and museum for a sweeping overview of both national and local history. In this charming museum you’ll find a vast array of local antiquities, including a hall dedicated to Oman’s famous seafaring history. Afterwards, spend your afternoon navigating the alleyways of Haffa souk laced with the characteristic aroma of frankincense and peruse handicrafts that preserve age-old Omani tradition. After your shopping, end your afternoon sipping fresh coconut milk from the stands that line the road near the beach, before being served Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 8 Salalah East
After breakfast, you will be driven east to explore the history and heights of Dhofar. First follow the mountain road past the grizzled “Travertine Curtain” over which water plummets during the Monsoon, to the serene Wadi Darbat, which sourced the ancient port city of Samharam below. Meander a bit further in the mountains before finally arriving at Jebel Samhan, one of the highest points in Dhofar. You’ll feel on top of the world as you take in the coastal plains of Eastern Salalah from atop 1000 meter cliffs. Then begin your decent down the mountain to the fishing village of Mirbat where you’ll view the remnants of Portuguese occupation at the harbor fort guard by triple cannons, and passing through Mirbat’s eery “ghost town” where you’ll glimpse a picture of the past in the deserted market and houses. After lunch, follow the coastal road back to Salalah, stopping by the ancient city of Samharam. You’ll have the opportunity to walk the excavated city streets of this fabled residence of the Queen of Sheba and historical capital for Frankincense trade under the brooding gaze of the twin cliffs that guard over this legendary harbor. As the sun begins to set, return to Salalah where Dinner will be served at your hotel.
Day 9 Salalah West
After breakfast, you will be driven to the west of Salalah to visit the beautiful spring of Sahalnoot, continuing onto the alleged mountaintop-tomb of the biblical prophet Job. Continue through the mountains for a chance to see the source of Dhofar’s Frankincense, seeing the tree in the wild, and smelling the aroma that recalls “home” for every Omani. From there continue to the coast, where you will take in the beautiful scenery and white sands of Mughsail Beach. There you’ll discover the the “blowholes” of seawater that spout up through the rocks during high tide, and take on the semblance of wave-powered geysers during the Monsoon. Dinner served at a local restaurant.
Day 10 Empty Quarter
Today you’ll take off from Salalah and enter the Empty Quarter, the world’s longest contiguous sand desert, and location of the tallest dunes on earth. Experience the vastness of this sand sea in the refreshing in the comfort of an air-conditioned, 4WD vehicle. Dinner will be cooked over a camp fire, and you’ll be sleeping in a tent under the stars.
Day 11 Salalah
For your last full day in Oman, you’ll wake up with the morning light in the desert and make your way back to Salalah and the sea. Say goodbye to this beautiful country in style by taking a boat into the pristine water surrounding the city and cruising about with pods of dolphins and tropical fish. Snorkeling and Scuba opportunities are also available. You’ll spend your last night in luxury in a hotel in Salalah. Dinner served at your hotel.
Day 12 Salalah / Departure
Say goodbye (for now) to the land of Frankincense. You’ll transfer from your hotel back to Salalah airport to gather up the memories you made experiencing the Best of Oman and make your way home.
